Pit bull chained to basement wall so scared she had to be carried out of shelter

Imagine being chained to a wall in a dark, cold basement sitting in your own waste. On top of that, you were part of a massive dog-fighting ring – forced to fight or be bait. That was life for Dixie, the then nine-month-old pit bull puppy.
Dixie was forced to live in a basement her whole life with no socialization. When she was rescued and taken to Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, Dixie was terrified of everything. In fact, when Dixie was transferred to Jasmine’s House, Inc., a pit bull rescue group, she had to be physically carried out of the shelter:

That photograph of Dixie being carried out of the shelter is what helped her find her forever home. Kara DeBord would soon adopt Dixie with her husband Nathan DeBord. They weren’t the only ones who had a say in Dixie becoming a part of the family, though. Their other rescue dog, Ana, was the deciding factor. They knew Ana would help a fearful dog like Dixie (BarkPost).
Still, Dixie’s past made her extremely timid and fearful of people. Kara, Nathan, Ana, and their other dog, Chip, who recently passed away, met with Dixie multiple times before adopting her. On their first visit, Dixie only peeked around the bushes five times while Kara and Nathan were sitting around the corner.
A year after her adoption, Dixie is blossoming. Though still not totally comfortable, she is finally finding her personality and coming out of her shell:
In fact, this past Mother’s Day, Dixie decided she finally wanted to play! It was a defining moment in Dixie’s post-basement life:

Dixie is still learning to be a dog but with Kara and Nathan by her side, she has a bright future:
